Ten trail stops invite Apex walkers to look closer at nature and history
The Natural Heritage Trail links Seymour Athletic Fields and the Nature Park amphitheater with interactive signs and a citizen-science project.

A walk becomes a different kind of outing when noticing things is part of the route. Apex’s Natural Heritage Trail has ten signed stops between Seymour Athletic Fields and the Apex Nature Park amphitheater, pairing environmental topics with local cultural history.
The Town says each stop includes information and a QR code for further exploration. It also invites visitors to join its iNaturalist project and record plants and animals encountered in the park. The idea is to connect an ordinary observation with a shared record of local biodiversity.

Start with a modest goal: photograph one plant or animal without disturbing it and note where and when you saw it. A clear image and accurate location are more useful than an overconfident identification. Leave wildlife and vegetation in place, stay on the route and let an uncertain identification remain uncertain until it can be checked.
Use the Town’s map to choose an entrance and review current park notices before heading out. Families can compare what different people notice at the same stop, then read the sign together. An outing does not need to cover every stop to be successful; returning later gives you a reason to notice how the same landscape changes.
